Family Fun for Every Budget
Looking to make the most of your New Orleans getaway? Here are some of our favorite ways to pack in the fun without breaking the bank.
Step into History
Explore the Garden District on foot with the Nola Tour Guy. These local guides bring the city’s stories to life as you pass grand mansions and legendary landmarks—from Jefferson Davis’s former home to filming spots for American Horror Story. Tours are free, but tips are appreciated.
Music Everywhere
You don’t have to buy a ticket to experience New Orleans’ legendary music scene. Jackson Square, Royal Street, and Frenchmen Street are always humming with brass bands, jazz trios, and percussionists. Every street corner becomes a stage for free performances—just bring a few dollars for tips.
A Playground That Sings
Head to the Music Box Village in the Bywater neighborhood, where every wall, window, and railing makes music. Created by local artists, this whimsical collection of sound-making houses invites visitors to touch, tap, and explore. During special events, musicians perform under the stars—but public play hours are free, so check the calendar before you go.
Sweet Traditions
Cool off at Hansen’s Sno-Bliz, home of the original New Orleans sno-ball. This family-run shop has been perfecting its fluffy ice and homemade syrups for over 85 years. With dozens of flavors to mix and match, it’s an only-in-NOLA treat your crew will crave long after you leave.
Storybook Adventures
Let your kids’ imaginations run wild at City Park’s Storyland, an outdoor fairytale playground shaded by giant oak trees. They’ll climb Jack’s beanstalk, set sail on Captain Hook’s ship, and visit Humpty Dumpty’s wall. Admission is free for little ones under 36 inches tall and $6 for everyone else.
Monkeying Around
Climb, splash, and explore at Monkey Hill, one of the city’s most beloved play spots. Known as the highest point in New Orleans (and one of the most fun), it features a multi-level treehouse, lion sculptures, wading pools, and plenty of space to roll, laugh, and play. Admission is included with your $25 zoo ticket.
Art That Moves You
End your day at New Orleans Resort, where the lobby’s interactive mural comes to life every hour. It’s a little piece of modern New Orleans magic—and a perfect end to a day of adventure.
