Family Fun for Every Budget
Looking to make the most of your Lake Tahoe getaway? Here are some of our favorite ways to pack in the fun without breaking the bank.
All Aboard for Adventure
The Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City is stocked with historic locomotives, passenger cars, and cabooses—many once used in classic Hollywood westerns. Knowledgeable curators share fascinating stories about the golden age of rail travel. If you’re lucky, you might even catch a restored steam engine in motion. Admission is free for visitors aged 17 and under.
Step Back in Time
Wander through Tahoe’s “Era of Opulence” at the Tallac Historic Site, once known as the “Grandest Resort in the World.” The 150-acre lakefront property invites you to stroll past 20 preserved buildings, lush gardens, and peaceful ponds. Every Wednesday in the summer is a Heritage Day, offering family-friendly activities and live demonstrations.
A Castle with a View
Hidden among Tahoe’s pines, Vikingsholm is a Scandinavian-style castle straight out of a storybook. Built in 1929, it overlooks Emerald Bay and sits beside the only waterfall that flows directly into Lake Tahoe. The property spans more than 230 acres perfect for hiking, sightseeing, and snapping photos. Admission is free for kids under the age of 7 and $12 for ages 7–17.
A Scenic Hike
For a hike with a reward, make your way to Monkey Rock. This 2.6-mile trail leads to a whimsical, gorilla-shaped rock formation overlooking panoramic views of Lake Tahoe. It’s an easy trek with a big payoff at the top. Park admission is just $2 per person.
Dig into the Gold Rush
Step into the Old West at The Way It Was Museum in Virginia City. This hidden gem showcases the boomtown’s mining days with vintage tools, wagons, and rare photos from the Gold Rush era. It’s an affordable and fascinating window into Nevada’s rugged past—and admission is just $5.
Trail Time and Trot Rides
For a little cowboy magic, head to Camp Richardson Corral, where kids can short horseback rides led by friendly wranglers. The gentle loops are great for beginners, and rides run from June through Labor Day for just $15.
Brews and Views
Parents can toast their Tahoe getaway on the Beer and Ale Trails, a self-guided tasting journey around the lake. Each stop offers a new craft beer and a stunning view, while kids can enjoy a soft drink and the scenery.
Mini Golf Moments
Wrap up the day at the Tahoe Ridge Resort mini golf course. Stop by the resort’s recreation desk to grab your gear and enjoy a few friendly rounds surrounded by mountain air and family laughter.
