Follow Turtles About Town, a public art trail featuring more than 60 brightly painted Kemp’s ridley sea turtle statues across the island. Each turtle tells a story—crafted by local artists to celebrate community and raise awareness for this endangered species.

Build Sandcastles

Head to East Beach for Sandcastle Saturdays, where families can learn sand-sculpting tips from the pros. Sessions are free, and they’re held every Saturday from Memorial Day to Labor Day at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m.

Step Aboard a Piece of History

Head to the Texas Seaport Museum at Pier 22, home of the 1877 tall ship ELISSA—a rare, still-seaworthy vessel that once carried cargo across the Atlantic. Walk the decks, explore nautical exhibits, and imagine life at sea more than a century ago. Admission is free for children aged 5 and under and $9 for kids ages 6–18.

Tree Sculpture Treasure Hunt

After Hurricane Ike, local artists turned tragedy into art by transforming fallen oak trees into incredible wood sculptures scattered throughout historic neighborhoods. Download a free walking or biking guide and see how many you can find together.

Satisfy Their Sweet Tooth

Step back in time at La King’s Confectionery and Ice Cream Parlor, a 1920s-style candy shop on the historic Strand. Watch as saltwater taffy is made on vintage equipment, taste more than 50 classic candies, and savor handmade pralines, fudge, and peanut brittle. Then head to the soda fountain for a sundae, malt, or milkshake made with “Purity” ice cream—a Texas favorite since 1889.

Try a Local Favorite

Ask any local where to find great seafood, and they’ll point you to Shrimp ’N Stuff. Just 10 blocks from the beach, this Galveston gem has been serving po’ boys, fried shrimp, and gumbo for decades. Dine in or order your meal to-go for a beach picnic.
