FUN THINGS TO DO IN GALVESTON
The Galveston Blog
Wander through lush landscapes at Galveston’s Tree Sculptures, or walk through the historic 1877 tall ship ELISSA at the Texas Seaport Museum. Plus, enjoy sandy beaches, fresh seafood, and amusement rides at the pier.
Coastal Art, Public Beaches, and Maritime History
Get a photo along Galveston’s Turtles About Town trail with your children. You'll see more than 60 colorful Kemp’s ridley sea turtle statues designed by local artists, which have popped up around the island since 2018 to heighten awareness of this endangered species. This community art project, started by the Turtle Island Restoration Network and Clay Cup Studios, provides an engaging way for families to explore the island, learn about wildlife protection, and advocate for these beautiful creatures. To get started, you can pick up a map at the Galveston Island Visitor Center or download a self-guided tour online.
You can also grab your sand pails and head to East Beach to enjoy family time in the sun. In anticipation of the city’s annual AIA Sandcastle Competition, the park hosts Sandcastle Saturdays to help beachgoers create spectacular sandcastles with building tips from an experienced professional. These interactive sessions take place every Saturday from Memorial Day to Labor Day at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m.
For a maritime adventure, visit the Texas Seaport Museum at Pier 22 to explore the historic 1877 tall ship ELISSA. This extraordinary museum recreates every facet of life around Galveston’s port during the 19th century, allowing you to climb aboard the still-seaworthy vessel and walk the decks. Inside, you’ll learn about the area’s legacy of maritime commerce and immigration through a database containing the names of more than 133,000 immigrants who entered the country through Galveston.
Historic Attractions and Public Exhibits
Branch out and explore Galveston’s Tree Sculptures, which were carved by local artists from the remains of majestic oaks that lined neighborhood streets before Hurricane Ike. These whimsical outdoor sculptures feature sea creatures, movie characters, and unique designs that make for an incredible family scavenger hunt. You can grab your walking shoes, hop on a bicycle, or rent a golf cart to see how many your family can spot using a downloaded walking guide.
For a sweet retreat, head over to La King’s Confectionery and Ice Cream Parlor, a 1920s throwback on Galveston’s historic Strand. You can watch master candy makers use old-fashioned recipes and centuries-old equipment to create peanut brittle, divinity candy, pecan pralines, fudge, and famous saltwater taffy right before your eyes. The working soda fountain also serves up classic malts, shakes, sundaes, and traditional "Purity" ice cream.
While you are exploring the Strand, stop by Hendley Market. This eclectic emporium is full to the brim with unique treasures, vintage postcards, and Victorian items. It features an array of fascinating finds for adults, alongside nostalgic items for children, making it a memorable place for the whole family to explore.
Dining, Brewery, and Resort Activities
When it is time to eat, join the locals at Shrimp ’N Stuff, a casual downtown spot located just 10 blocks from the beach. Known for delicious seafood dinners, po’ boys, gumbos, and salads, this neighborhood staple is open daily for lunch and dinner. You can even call ahead to have your order ready for a family picnic or quick pickup.
Afterward, walk into Galveston Island Brewery and experience the welcoming family vibe. The relaxed atmosphere features games for children, 18 taps of island brews, pub grub, and local food trucks. You can also enjoy complimentary brewery tours hosted every Saturday at 1 p.m.
Finally, head over to our Galveston Beach Resort Activity Center for some hands-on family fun. Our resort staff will provide all the materials your children need to design and build their own custom kites. Once their creations are complete, you can head outside together and watch them fly through the gorgeous sea air.
